Selling Stories,
Shaping Audiences:
A UK vs. US perspective on Visual Marketing
This dissertation examines the visual significance of book cover design, focusing on a comparative analysis of UK and US editions of three separate novels:
• Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim
• Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
• A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid
This study explores and gives criticism on consumerism and how design choices reflect publishers’ treatment of their audiences. The covers are analysed with a detailed look into how colour is used, what visual elements are present and what their chosen typeface conveys. Overall, taking into account what design choices an illustrator or design department has made that might have led them to the final cover outcome.
Emerging trends are also investigated, both online and instore, with particular attention given to the BookTok community, researching into its demographics and also Penguin’s First Impression publications, analysing how they’re influenced by the growing trends from that specific online community.
This project uses firsthand experiences as a reader, backed up with evidence from multiple primary and secondary sources such as visiting book festivals, research books, journals, interviews, articles, and video essays.
